What is a hardware wallet?
Do I need a hardware wallet?
No, but a hardware wallet provides an invaluable layer of protection. Malicious links, sites, scams, any of these could potentially empty your wallet in seconds with just one click. A hardware wallet creates one additional step, requiring you to manually approve the transaction.
What does "Cold Storage" mean?
The Hardware Wallet stores your "access keys." Your digital assets remain on the blockchain. If you were to throw your hardware wallet into the ocean, your digital assets are still on-chain. Your wallet acts as a firewall of sorts, and stores your access keys offline.
When do I use my wallet?
Hot Wallets:
- After installing MetaMask, you will have a hot wallet, meaning a wallet used on your mobile device or desktop where keys are stored on a device that is accessing your wallet.
- Convenient
- Nothing of value is normally stored in this wallet
- Often used for minting, connecting to multiple sites, buying, listing, selling
Cold Wallets:
- Hardware Wallets
- Never recommended to connect to sites or sign transactions
- Often used as a "vault", assets are transferred TO this wallet to remain safe, but can be easily transferred back to your hot wallet for listing, selling, etc
